The Coaching section of the app comes into its own when:
You've been through the obvious things when it comes to getting a goal or habit on track, and they haven't worked
You're entering into unfamiliar territory, and you're not quite sure which approach to take or what to do next
This can happen when you're working on something outside your comfort zone, or you've come across a problem you haven't seen before - even when on familiar territory.
How do you know when you've hit an obstacle?
One of your goals is persistently behind plan, or you just can't get a habit to stick.
You've tried all the obvious things to get things back in track, but they aren't working out the way you want.
You have a sixth-sense that something isn't quite right below the surface, but you can't quite see what it is
Navigating an obstacle involves:
Defining it
Going back to first principles in understanding its root cause
Creatively generating a range of options to address it
Selecting the most appropriate option
Deciding what to do next
Doing it, and seeing if it makes a difference (otherwise, repeat the process)
It's worth finding some quiet time to think about this, and record your thoughts in the app on the above points.
While not always essential, often it's helpful to involve someone else in this process, like a coach or subject matter expert. Either work through the issues yourself, and come up with your initial point of view to discuss with them, capturing any further points they have in the coaching notes section. Or just work through all of it from scratch side by side with them, and record key points in the app.
What's most important is that you generate a clear, doable set of next steps - and you schedule time to do them.
Then, hopefully, as you continue to monitor performance on your goals and habits, you'll start to see improvements - as the solutions to the obstacle have a positive impact.
If you don't see the improvements you hoped for first time around, don't be disheartened. Be alert to the learning opportunities, and repeat the process until you see positive results.
